The University of Pittsburgh is now a participating institution with the Collaborative
Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) research ethics education program.
Beginning Monday March 5th 2012 all Human Subject Research Training requirements
must be met by completing CITI courses. Users who have previously completed IRB
requirements on the Internet-Based Studies in Education and Research (ISER) site
will have 12 months to complete the CITI courses. Any questions from researchers
or their administrators will be answered in a timely fashion by e-mailing

- I've completed the CITI training, when
can I access OSIRIS?
Users who complete the CITI courses before 8 PM will have access to OSIRIS the following
day. If you created your HSConnect account the same day you finished the CITI courses,
please allow an additional 24 hours processing time.
- Why is the university's IRB switching
to CITI from the previous modules?
CITI has become the de facto standard for researcher training across the United
States. By adopting the CITI program, researchers can be assured they are receiving
the most up to date training information and also gain the benefit of transferring
their completed training if they collaborate with an institution that also uses

All individuals who are listed in an OSIRIS application MUST complete the courses
before they can be listed in the protocol. Furthermore, any key member of the research
team who interacts with subjects, or obtains (i.e., sees) identifiable subject data
should also complete the CITI human subjects training courses.
- How do I access CITI?
In order to access CITI and affiliate with the University of Pittsburgh, users must
use the Pitt designated CITI Access Portal (www.citi.pitt.edu) and login using your
Pitt HSConnect account (allows you to access administrative, educational and research
resources using a single account and online profile). If you already have a CITI
account, there will be an opportunity to also enter your current CITI username/password
to link your previously completed training. Please review the CITI Instruction Sheet which is also displayed on the CITI
Access Portal page for detailed information.
- How do I print my CITI Certificates?
Users can print their official CITI certificates through the CITI Access Portal
(www.citi.pitt.edu). After entering
your HSConnect credentials the user will be directed to CITI where they will see
their completed courses and links to print their certificates.
- Do CITI courses have CME/CEU's and what is the
CME/CEU course credits are available from CITI for a nominal fee. Detailed information
is available on the CITI Main Menu.
- I still see "Research Integrity (Formerly
Module 1)" listed on the ISER site (cme.hs.pitt.edu), can I take this instead of
No. All members of the research who are conducting Human Subjects Research are now
required to complete the CITI courses. However, the Research Integrity (Formerly
Module 1) module is still available on the ISER site as other schools, departments,
and centers may still require completion of this module (i.e., IACUC).
- I am in the process of completing the
old requirements on the ISER site (cme.hs.pitt.edu), what should I do?
If you started but have not completed the ISER modules, please to go
www.citi.pitt.edu and complete the CITI courses.
- I recently completed the ISER modules,
do I need to now complete the CITI courses?
If you have completed both Research Integrity and one of the Human Subjects Research
modules before March 5th, you will be certified for 1 year. All users must complete
the CITI courses by March 2013.
- Can I still access my previous training
from the ISER site (cme.hs.pitt.edu)?
Absolutely. Please visit https://cme.hs.pitt.edu
and after logging into the site click the "My Account" link in the menu bar.
- I have removed my affiliation
from the University of Pittsburgh and can no longer access my CITI page, now what?
- Get your CITI username and password via
- Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We will remove you
from our database so that you will appear to be a new user to the Pitt system.
We will notify you when this is done.
- After you receive notification from us, Go to www.citi.pitt.edu and click on the

CITI training can be verified through HSConnect in the same manner as ISER training
was in the past. You can verify the completed training and dates but cannot print
the corresponding certificates at this time.
- How long does completed training take to show
up in HSConnect?
CITI data is transferred nightly to HSConnect at 10 PM. Please allow 24 hours for
this process to occur for newly completed courses.
